 Reading / Phonics

At Rivacre Valley, we value the love of reading and feel that it is paramount to our curriculum. Reading opens doors for children and provides a solid foundation for other subjects and life skills. Our teaching of reading and reading areas and displays around the school demonstrate our passion for reading and books.

We use Read, Write Inc to teach Phonics and use a variety of reading schemes to support our teaching of reading. This phonics scheme is taught across Early Years and Key Stage 1 and used as a catch up scheme in KS2. Our ReadWriteInc information

Reading Spine

With the recognition of how important reading is, we want our children to be fully engaged. It provides creativity, imagination and escapism! Click on the image below to see our reading spine: 

Reading Raffle

At Rivacre Valley, we promote a love of reading and reward children who read at home.

Each Friday, raffle tickets are given out by teachers. Children receive 2 tickets for each time they read or complete an activity from the booklet. At the end of each half term, there will be a chance for children to 'spend' their raffle tickets in our Reading Shop!

Writing

Our writing at Rivacre Valley has strong links to what we read and we make cross-curricular links where possible. We provide children with meaningful writing opportunities throughout the school. Children apply their phonics, spelling work, English skills and also weave a range of adventurous vocabulary into their writing. They have opportunities to edit their writing and present in a variety of ways. Children's writing is celebrated around our school.

Maths

We use Power Maths for the delivery of our Maths from Reception up to the end of Key Stage Two. Power Maths is a whole-class mastery programme recommended by the DfE and is designed to spark curiosity and excitement and help schools nurture confidence in maths.
